The Mariners made a difficult move Friday, designating lefty-specialist Marc Rzepczynski for assignment. In a corresponding move, the Mariners recalled lefty Roenis Elias for his second tour of duty with Seattle.
The move was not shocking for most Mariners fans, who have clamored for Rzepczynski’s release after the veteran lefty struggled badly in 2018. Thus far, “Scrabble” had posted a 7.43 FIP with a staggering 2.87 WHIP. He also walked 9 hitters in 7.2 innings.
Rzepczynski was in the final year of his 2 year deal with the Mariners. After an up and down first season, Seattle was counting on Rzepczynski to be their left-handed weapon out of the pen. Obviously, he did not deliver.
The Mariners now have 7 days to trade, release or hope another team claims him on waivers. In all likelihood, Rzepczynski will become a free agent within the week. It is difficult to see a team claiming him or trading for him with roughly $3 million of salary left to pay.
In order to help replace Rzepczynski, the Mariners recalled Roenis Elias from AAA Tacoma. Elias was re-acquired by Jerry Dipoto from the Red Sox earlier this season. Elias was originally traded in the winter of 2016 for Wade Miley.
The left-handed pitcher will join the Mariners bullpen for Friday’s game against Tampa Bay and provides length and quality depth for the club. A gifted athlete, Elias flashed at times for Seattle in 2014 and 2015.
Possessing a low 90’s fastball and 12-6 curveball, Elias stuff might play up in the pen. However, his changeup has been his go-to pitch in 2018. If he can get all 3 working, Elias might find himself in the rotation soon.

While it appears he will be asked to work from the pen, it is worth noting that he was starting for Tacoma prior to his call-up. A DL stint for Felix Hernandez or Wade LeBlanc may be just around the corner.
