Sodo Mojo’s Top 10 Mariners Prospects: #5 Julio Rodriguez
One of the most important prospects in the future of the Mariners might be a 17-year-old kid. A lot of pressure to be sure. However, the Mariners need to continue to develop this level of talent, to help rebuild the farm, and foster the next generation of Mariners talent.
Julio Rodriguez was the headliner of a solid international signing class by the Mariners in July of 2017. Ranked as the 9th best international prospect by MLB Pipeline, Rodriguez scouting report reads like a Jerry Dipoto fan fiction.
Unlike many young Dominican hitters, Rodriguez already shows an advanced approach at the plate, willing to be patient and wait for his pitch. Scouts rave about his potential as a middle of the order threat, who could develop plus power as he fills out.
Rodriguez has a noticeable hitch in his set up, which can lead to timing issues on occasion. Rodriguez has good bat speed, which helps him overcome this set-up as he continues to refine his craft.
As it stands now, Rodriguez already grades out well offensively, and many scouts believe there is a high-ceiling Rodriguez can tap into. While not a burner, Rodriguez is an average runner who can pick up steam once he gets going.
Defensively, Rodriguez feels like a natural fit in right field. He has the arm strength and athleticism to succeed there. His bat profiles best there, and he should be an above average defender.

Rodriguez has a better skill set with a higher upside than a few names we will see ranked ahead of him on our list. His age, combined with his lack of a professional resume, leaves him at #5 on our list. By this time next year, he could rank as high as second, barring any surprising trades.

Rodriguez is one of the few Mariners prospects worth dreaming on. He has a legitimate chance to not only play in the big leagues, but to be an everyday contributor, if not more. Dreaming on a guy like Rodriguez is easy. Being patient enough to see the results is a whole different story.
