A Mariners prospect since 2014, Brayan Hernandez has made quite an impression on the new regime. Hernandez was named a Domincan League All-Star in 2015, and held his own in the Arizona Rookie League as an 18 year old.

Hernandez is still years away from making an impact for the Seattle Mariners, but the young, toolsy outfielder offers tremendous upside to a farm system deprived of such players. He is currently playing for the Everett Aqua Sox, where he is a work in progress.

Hernandez tool set includes plus speed and arm strength, which he uses to play a quality centerfield. While still learning the finer points of base stealing, Hernandez has been successful on 32 of 44 attempts.

Whether or not the bat will play continues to be seen. He flashes at times with above average bat speed and loft that could allow for more power as he adds strength. Hernandez will struggle to put the ball in play at times, striking out 116 times in 510 career AB.

Like most young international signings, Hernandez needs to be more patient at the plate, especially if he wishes to stay on the Dipoto-led M’s. Hernandez still drives the ball with authority, showing an ability to use the whole field.

The team believes he will continue to grow in his approach, and could become a top of the order catalyst. The 19 year old will likely spend the entire season with the Aqua Sox. The Mariners have no incentive to rush the 19 year old. Seattle’s suddenly strong outfield depth could make Hernandez an appealing trade chip at the deadline.

Should he stick around for the long haul, there is a lot of Melvin Upton in his game. Only time will tell what will become of the talented young outfielder.
