Before and during last night’s latest gaff from the Mariners that put them at a team-worst 2-8 record after 10 games, we asked you how many runs the M’s 5th starter would allow against the Houston Astros.
Coming into this season, Gallardo was carrying a 3.80 career ERA but a 5.48 ERA over the past two years. He was also battling injuries and he had hoped he could regain his all-star form from 2010.
In his first start against the Los Angeles Angels last Friday, Gallardo surrendered three runs over five innings giving him a 5.40 ERA to start the very young season.
With so much losing happening for the Mariners so far, Gallardo had a chance to lift Mariners fans spirits with a brilliant bounceback outing.
That is why we asked the question in our daily (when possible) in-game Twitter poll how many runs the Mexican right-hander would surrender to George Springer’s and Jose Altuve’s Astros.
While he started out very strong allowing just one hit, one walk, and no runs over the first three innings. He exposed his weaknesses again and was tagged for two runs in the 4th and two more in the 5th.

Following the pair of runs allowed in each of those middle innings, Gallardo was once again pulled before he could reach the 6th inning.
It also meant that the majority of voters chose correctly for selecting that he would allow 2-4 runs. Had he allowed a single with two outs in the 5th to Alex Bergman instead of inducing a fielder’s choice groundout, Altuve would have surely made it all the way home from second base meaning Gallardo would’ve given up five runs.
In the bigger picture, Gallardo now has an ERA of 6.30 through two starts. His next scheduled start is next Tuesday in an inter-league matchup versus the Miami Marlins at home in Safeco Field.
Over eight games facing the Marlins, Gallardo has his 2nd lowest ERA in the league at 1.90. Will he continue to dominate the fish? Will it be an in-game Twitter poll? Stay tuned to @sodomojoFS to find out!
