The younger Mariners helped the team bounce back from yesterday’s 12-7 loss to the Los Angeles Angels. Today they beat the Kansas City Royals 9-2 to avenge their 14-3 loss to them earlier this spring.

The Mariners scored early and often against Royals pitching, plating at least one run in each of the first four innings. Oddly, the first five runs were all scored on either an out or an error.

The early offensive production helped out the newest M’s arm, Chase De Jong, who allowed two runs (one earned) over four innings of work. While it was De Jong’s longest outing of his three so far this spring, he has allowed at least one run in all of his appearances.

Heading into the 6th, the M’s were up 6-2 but were gearing up to grow that lead. First, Motter doubled home a run for his second hit and second RBI of the day. Then, four batters later,  Powell doubled for his third hit of the day bringing in two runs.

Both Motter and Powell have had very impressive springs so far. Powell is hitting for a scorching .577 with two triples and four RBI. Motter may only be hitting .321 in comparison to Powell but he has a home run, two doubles, five walks drawn, six RBIs and four stolen bases.

After the pair of two-baggers, the M’s were now ahead 9-2.

The M’s have now alternated wins and losses the last four games, looking good one day, like today, then falling apart on the mound and at the plate.

With many of the M’s still at the WBC, the unpredictability of these M’s is likely to continue.

It is great to see players like Motter and Powell put things together like they have this spring, it would just be better if they and the rest of the M’s in the lineup could do that every game.

Tomorrow on St. Patrick’s Day, the Mariners take on the Los Angeles Dodgers for the second time in three days. Hopefully, the M’s can put together back-to-back wins, something they haven’t done since March 11th-12th.
