With the news that the Boston Red Sox have traded Clay Buchholz to the Philadelphia Phillies, does this mean that the Mariners are more or less likely to acquire starter, Drew Pomeranz in a trade of their own?

Despite having a rotation that, on paper, is a force to be reckoned even without Drew Pomeranz, the Red Sox haven’t been so eager to ship the left-hander to the Mariners or any other club for that matter.

There have been rumors about him possibly heading to Seattle, but nothing has developed into more than just talk.

However, with the latest trade of Clay Buccholz to the Phillies, and the rumors that the Red Sox may target the Rays Chris Archer (even if those rumors have Pomeranz going to Tampa) it opens the door a little further to the idea that Pomeranz may be on the way out.

In their process of building a “super team”, the Red Sox would be hoping to get a good deal back if they did decide to ship Pomeranz to the Pacific Northwest.

The M’s did offer up Seth Smith as a trade piece a couple weeks back, nearly landing him in Boston, but just like the Pomeranz chatter to Seattle, nothing ever materialized.

The Red Sox seem willing to consider offers for a guy who will have to fight for a five spot in the rotation, but look to be waiting for offers to come to them about Pomeranz instead of actively shopping him around.

This could work out for the Mariners and Dipoto, as the M’s GM has stated:

"“If we can find a way to add veteran innings to our current group, we would look to do that. We’ve looked at the free-agent pool. We’ve looked at potential trade targets. We’re open-minded and pretty creative.”"

If the Mariners really want Pomeranz, it is definitely in their capability to grab him, it will probably just take something more “creative” than a straight up swap for Seth Smith.
