Mariners GM Jerry Dipoto is addicted to change. Better yet, let’s say he’s addicted to finding the right formula for his team to win.

Over the years, Mark Trumbo hasn’t been part of that formula, but it appears that this time around it could be. This would be the third time the pair are connecting.

If for some reason you forgot, free agent, Mark Trumbo, likes hitting home runs.

In each of the last five years, he’s played at least one hundred games. In all of those seasons, he hit at least twenty home runs, twice breaking the thirty homer threshold and last year he set a personal-best -that ending up being a league-best- forty-seven long bombs.

The year after he first broke the thirty homer mark, then Los Angeles Angels GM, Dipoto, traded Trumbo to the Arizona Diamondbacks.

It was a three-way trade that saw pieces like Tyler Skaggs come to LA from the Diamondbacks. Hector Santiago also made the trip west as he was sent packing from the Chicago Whitesox.

The next year the two reunited in Seattle when Dipoto was brought on as the Mariners GM and Trumbo became a Mariners utilityman.

Statistically, Trumbo’s time on the Mariners was the worst of his career. Over ninety-six games, he hit thirteen home runs and drove in forty-one RBI, which would both be his lowest totals over a full season.

This put Dipoto in the awkward situation where he would have to tell Trumbo that he was traded for the second time. The deal would turn out to be one of the most lopsided exchanges in recent memory. The Mariners received Steve Clevenger and the Baltimore Orioles got Trumbo.

Trumbo would have a remarkable year with the Orioles posting career-highs of forty-seven home runs and one hundred and eight RBI. With these numbers, he earned an All-Star Game selection and won the Silver Slugger Award.

Clevenger did nothing except for offend thousands of people with his racially insensitive tweets.

The Orioles tried to offer a longer term deal to Trumbo, but after a couple of weeks, the deal is reportedly off the table.

Now the Colorado Rockies, Texas Rangers, and Mariners are all interested in signing the big time power hitter.

According to reports, The M’s and Trumbo are in the midst of some “serious” discussions, meaning that it is possible that Dipoto and Trumbo could reunite for a third time as early as tomorrow morning.

We will all be waiting eagerly to see how events unfold.
