Mariners Game Recap: M’s Come Overcome Early Deficit vs. Halos
The Mariners battled back from an early deficit to take game three from the Angels as Cody Martin earned the win in his spot start.
The Seattle Mariners (64-55) beat the Los Angeles Angels (50-70) 4-3 as Cody Martin pitched a solid game in a spot start in place of the injured James Paxton. Martin earned the win for the M’s in his first start of the year to advance to 2-2 and Edwin Diaz squeaked by in the ninth to tally his eighth save of the year in as many opportunities. Tyler Skaggs was dealt the loss to fall to 1-1 on the season.
Cody Martin struggled in the bottom of the first allowing two runs on three singles, a hit batter and a sacrifice fly to put the Mariners down 2-0 early. But Martin settled down, allowing the offense an opportunity to make up some ground.

In the top of the second, each of the first three hitters reached base with a walk, single, and a hit by pitch to load the bases for Chris Iannetta. He lined an RBI single off the glove of third baseman Yunel Escobar scoring Nelson Cruz. With the bases still loaded, Leonys Martin hit a sacrifice fly out to Mike Trout to drive in Kyle Seager to tie the game up at 2-2.
In the fourth inning the Mariners tacked on a couple more runs on a Ketel Marte sacrifice fly to score Iannetta, who had lead off the inning with a ground rule double and moved to third on a Leonys Martin single. Next up was Shawn O’Malley who bunted a ball back to the pitcher and beat out the throw to first as Martin raced around third and scored, beating the ball home.
Cody Martin settled into his own and pitched well into the fifth, finishing the night going 4.1 innings while giving up 2 earned runs on 7 hits. Drew Storen came on in relief to a one out, bases loaded situation to strike out Trout and induce an Albert Pujols lineout.
Storen went into the sixth, ending the night going 1.1 innings of no-hit ball before Vidal Nuno came in to get the last out of the sixth inning. Arquimedes Caminero took over in the bottom of the seventh inning and ended up in a two-on, two-out situation facing Trout to strike him out and end the inning.

Tom Wilhelmsen threw a scoreless eighth inning to send it to the ninth for Edwin Diaz. Diaz allowed a run on a pair of singles to cut the M’s lead to 4-3 before striking out Calhoun. A single by Trout put runners on second and third with one out for Pujols.
Scott Servais opted to intentionally walk Pujols to load the bases and pitch to Jefry Marte. Diaz made quick work of Marte, striking him out on three pitches, before reaching a full count on Andrelton Simmons with the tying run on third base. As Mariners fans everywhere were holding their breath, Diaz got Simmons to ground out to Seager at third, securing the victory.
