Mariners Game Recap: 6-Game Winning Streak Ends in Oakland
The A’s snapped the Mariners 6-game winning streak on Friday night in Oakland.
The Seattle Mariners came up short against the Oakland A’s on Friday night, losing 6-3 in the series opener. Joe Wieland (0-1, 10.80 ERA) took the loss for the Mariners, and Sean Manaea (4-7, 4.57 ERA) earned the win for the Athletics. Ryan Madson made it look easy in the ninth to record his 25th save of the season.
Joe Wieland made his M’s debut on Friday night, and the Athletics jumped all over the 26-year-old right-hander in the first inning. Marcus Semien came through with a one-out single, and he hustled around to score on a Stephen Vogt double to right field. The next batter was Khris Davis, and the A’s slugger clubbed a two-run shot over the wall in right field to give Oakland a 3-0 lead.

The score remained unchanged until the top of the fifth inning. Kyle Seager got the Mariners on the scoreboard with a solo home run to right field. Seager’s 22nd homer of the season made it a 3-1 game.
The Mariners stormed back to tie the game in the sixth inning. Ketel Marte led off the frame with a single on a line drive to right field. Shawn O’Malley followed by slicing a triple into the right-center field gap to plate Marte from first base. Franklin Gutierrez then drove in O’Malley on a sacrifice fly to tie the game midway through the sixth inning.
Unfortunately, Oakland regained the lead in the home half of the sixth. Semien started the rally with a leadoff single. Vogt and Davis both singled to load the bases for the A’s with none out. Yonder Alonso drove in Semien and Vogt on a single to chase Wieland from the game. Drew Storen failed to stop the bleeding, allowing Danny Valencia to single home Davis to extend the A’s lead to 6-3.

Wieland exited the game after allowing 6 runs on 9 hits across 5 innings of work. He had moments of effectiveness, but also left far too many pitches over the heart of the plate tonight. Wieland tallied 3 strikeouts and did not issue any free passes.
Vidal Nuno pitched the final two innings for the Mariners this evening. The funky southpaw kept the A’s out of the run column while allowing just two hits.
The Mariners (60-54) will try to start a new winning streak on Saturday night against the A’s (52-64) in Oakland. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 pm from the Oakland Coliseum. Hisashi Iwakuma (13-7, 3.79 ERA) will be on the bump for the M’s, and the A’s will turn to Kendall Graveman (8-7, 4.29 ERA).
