Mariners News: Marte to DL with Mono; Sardinas Recalled
The Mariners have called up Luis Sardinas from Tacoma and Ketel Marte has been placed on the DL with Mono.
Ketel Marte is battling mononucleosis, more commonly known as mono, and will serve time on the DL. Mono commonly causes a fever, body aches, and fatigue to the infected individual, and can take as long as a month or two to get back to feeling normal.
Luis Sardinas was promoted this morning to fill the empty spot created when Mike Montgomery was traded to the Cubs. He will fill in at shortstop and is expected to split time with Shawn O’Malley in Marte’s absence.
Bob Dutton of the Tacoma News Tribune broke the news on twitter this afternoon.
He also reported that the Mariners are expected to call up a pitcher to fill Marte’s spot on the 25-man roster. A reliever is most likely to be promoted.
This will be Marte’s second stint on the disabled list this season. The young shortstop is hitting .273/.299/.358 with 17 doubles in 74 games played this year. He has no timetable to return yet.
Sardinas has played 25 games this season with the Mariners and is hitting .190 with two home runs. In 42 games with AAA Tacoma, he has batted .250 with 17 runs scored.

O’Malley is starting at short tonight in Toronto and is currently hitting .218 with 5 doubles and 7 RBI in 87 at-bats. First pitch is scheduled for 4:10pm PT as James Paxton faces the Blue Jays.
