The Mariners finally got back to their winning ways on Tuesday night with the help of a dominant offensive performance.

Most of the time, teams don’t find themselves in must-win situations this early in the season. Tonight though, the Seattle Mariners were tasked with bouncing back from a losing skid to prevent themselves from falling five games behind the Texas Rangers in the blink of an eye. It was a game that had to be won.

Thankfully, it was won, and then some.

Getting the win was Wade Miley (6-2, 5.85 ERA), giving up no runs in seven innings to recover from a disappointing start against the Padres. On the other side was a struggling Cody Anderson (1-4, 6.81 ERA), who took the loss.

Miley was finally able to get past his first inning troubles, sitting the Indians down 1-2-3 to start off the game. He remained consistent all night long, giving the bullpen a much needed break after some starting pitching problems the last couple weeks.

Nelson Cruz led off the game’s scoring in the bottom half of the first with a two-run homer, his 15th of the year.

Things remained relatively quiet for a couple innings, but Steve Clevenger was determined to put an end to this with two outs in the fourth, knocking in two more runs on a line drive double into the right field corner. Shawn O’Malley followed up with two more RBI of his own on a triple into the left-center gap to make it 6-0.

From that point forward, Miley was dialed in. In his last three innings of work, he retired nine of ten men, giving up only one hit. The big night also wasn’t over for Cruz, who tacked on another run with his second homer on the night in the fifth. Adam Lind and Seth Smith were both able to string together two hits apiece as well.

The Indians finally got on the board in the seventh inning when Lonnie Chisenhall hit a solo homer to right field off of Joaquin Benoit, his second hit of the night.

This and an infield single in the ninth by Francisco Lindor were the only blemishes on the bullpen, as Steve Cishek was able to strike out the side to close out a non-save opportunity for the Mariners.
