The Seattle Mariners blasted past the Orioles on Thursday to clinch the series win in Baltimore.
The Seattle Mariners (23-17) beat the AL’s best Baltimore Orioles (24-14) today at Camden Yards. Nate Karns (4-1, 3.33 ERA) was the winning pitcher for the Mariners. Tyler Wilson (2-2, 3.68 ERA) took the loss for the Orioles. With the win, the Mariners improved their road record to 15-7, the best in baseball.
Nate Karn’s curveball was working early and remained effective throughout the game. He retired the first five batters in a row before giving up a single to Johnathn Schoop in the second inning. Schoop eventually scored on a double by Pedro Alvarez. Karns needed a lot of pitches in today’s game, so he came out after the fifth inning. He pitched five innings, striking out five and only allowing one run.
Mariners scoring was started by none other than Nelson Cruz. He brought in Nori Aoki with an RBI single in the first. Baltimore’s starting pitcher Tyler Wilson walked Ketel Marte to start the 5th, he was advanced on a Leonys Martin fly ball and scored a Seth Smith single. 2-1 Mariners.
The Mariners broke scoring open in the sixth inning. Robinson Cano started things off with a double and one out later, Kyle Seager was intentionally walked. Shortly after, on a 3-2 count, Adam Lind popped a home run over the left field wall to make the score 5-1 Mariners.

After Benoit gave up a run to make the score 5-2, the Mariners needed some insurance runs going into the ninth. They delivered. Lind and Steve Clevenger opened the inning by lining out to Adam Jones in center field. Ketel Marte was having none of that and promptly roped a double into left field. Not long after that, Leonys Martin hit a 2-run home run to right center to make the score 7-2.
Nick Vincent came on in relief for Karns and continued his domination of right handed hitters. So far this season, righties are hitting .125 (5-40) with 15 K’s and 1 BB against Vincent. Vincent pitched a 1-2-3 sixth inning, and got the first two outs of the seventh inning inning before handing the ball over to Vidal Nuno for the last out in the inning.

Joaquin Benoit pitched the 8th inning, loaded the bases with 1-out, and gave up a run on an Adam Jones ground out before getting Chris Davis to fly out. Steve Cishek pitched a perfect 9th inning to earn the save for the Mariners. Baltimore’s biggest weapons, Machado, Jones and Davis, combined to go 2-30 with 0 HR and 1 RBI against Mariners pitching this series.
Unlike in previous seasons, the M’s are receiving significant contributions this season from the bottom third of their order. Mariners 7, 8 and 9 hitters have combined to hit 15 homers this season (tied 2nd AL). They have also drawn 39 walks as a group (3rd AL).
