The Seattle Mariners winning streak is halted at five games as the Mariners lose to the Cleveland Indians on Tuesday evening thanks to the stellar pitching of Josh Tomlin and the Cleveland Indians bullpen.

The Seattle Mariners (15-13-2) lose to the Cleveland Indians (14-12-4) 4-1 Tuesday evening in Goodyear, AZ.  Josh Tomlin (1-0, 4.67 ERA) earned the win, and Taijuan Walker (1-3, 6.55 ERA) was tagged with the loss for the Mariners.

Taijuan Walker had a great outing tonight but was unable to get much run support.  The Prince pitched 5 innings and allowed 3 runs on 6 hits, 2 walks, and 7 strikeouts.  He was working on using a slider tonight for the first time. The results were pretty good.

In the first inning Walker gave up two singles and a sacrifice fly to Yan Gomes to give up a run.  In the second inning he only allowed a leadoff single.  In the third inning he was coasting along and after two outs allowed a walk to Carlos Santana and a home run to Yan Gomes.  In the fourth he left two runners stranded and in the fifth he retired the side in order.

Mayckol Guaipe and Mike Montgomery pitched perfect innings in the 6th and 7th in relief.  Blake Parker gave up a run to Cleveland in the 9th on a sacrifice fly.  The Mariners bullpen had another relatively successful evening. If you are looking for the silver lining in this game it’s the pitching from the starter to the bullpen.

But the real story of the game was that the Mariners offense was shut down tonight by Josh Tomlin.  Tomlin scattered three Mariners hits over 6 innings and struck out 10 batters and no walks.  He was an ace for his team tonight.  The Mariners couldn’t get anything going.  Zach McAllister and Ross Detwiler each pitched a quiet inning in the 7th and 8th inning.  Dan Otero allowed one run in the ninth but was able to finish the game.  The Mariners lone run came in the 9th inning on an RBI single to center by Dan Robertson who is battling to make the team.
