The M’s perfect Cactus League record is prefect no more following their 5-2 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers.
The Seattle Mariners (2-1) were unable to add their third consecutive victory in Cactus League play today, losing to the Milwaukee Brewers (3-0) by a final score of 5-2. Taijuan Walker (0-1, 4.50 ERA) took the loss for the visiting Mariners, and Wily Peralta (1-0, 0.00 ERA) earned his victory this spring for the Brewers. Jaye Chapman picked up the save for the home side.

Taijuan Walker started off strong in the first, throwing only 11 pitches to three batters. The second inning was where he ran into a little bit of trouble. The Brewers got their first run on a full count lead-off walk to Kirk Nieuwenhuis, a Herman Perez single, Shane Patterson fly-out, a Martin Maldonado bases loading single and a sacrifice fly from Garin Cecchini, scored Nieuwenhuis. Walker ended with 32 pitches (18 S, 16 B), 1 BB, 1 H, 1 ER in 2 innings.Â
Cody Martin pitched an impressive 3rd and 4th innings allowing no earned runs on 1 hit while striking out 1.  Hometown talent Adrian Sampson gave up 2 earned runs in 2 innings with no walks or strikeouts. Mayckol Guaipe (a pitcher we saw last season) also had a little bit of a rough first outing, giving up 2 ER on one walk and a home run. The M’s called on Paul Fry to work the 9th, and the young southpaw did a nice job keeping the Brewers off the scoreboard.
The Mariners offense was quiet in this game. The only hits the Mariners saw going into their run scoring 8th inning were from Seth Smith (2-2 on the day), a bunt single from Shawn O’Malley, and singles from Luis Sardinas and Steve Baron. They plated their only two runs of the day on a two-run home run from who is that, RF Mike Baxter.

Luis Sardinas is proving to be a player to watch this spring. If you’ll remember, The Mariners acquired the 22-year-old shortstop from the Brewers this offseason in exchange for Ramon Flores. In yesterday’s game, as adefensive replacement, he went 2-for-3 with two doubles (both with 2-outs) and 4 RBI. Today he started at shortstop going 1-for-2 with an impressive defensive snag on an Aaron Hill line drive.
