Braden Bishop is worth rooting for, on and off the field.

It must have been a dream come true for Braden Bishop to be selected by the Seattle Mariners in the third round of the 2015 draft. The 22-year-old center fielder spent three years going to school at the University of Washington before being picked by the M’s last June.

Similarly to Austin Cousino, no one questions Bishop’s ability to play defense. He has excellent range, and has the look of a big league center fielder. However, some scouts have concerns about whether Bishop will ever hit enough to be a viable everyday player in Seattle. He certainly proved the skeptics wrong during his first professional season in 2015.

The Mariners assigned Bishop to the Everett AquaSox of the Northwest League last season. Bishop excelled in Everett, slashing .320/.367/.393 across 248 plate appearances. He showed much more pop than most experts expected, clubbing a pair of home runs and driving in 22 runs through 56 games. Bishop also contributed 8 doubles, 2 triples and 13 stolen bases.

Bishop showcased a reliable glove and an accurate arm last season in the Northwest League. He committed just 1 error in over 450 innings, and posted a .992 fielding percentage. Bishop also tallied 5 outfield assists and registered a 2.49 range factor per 9 innings as a center fielder.

Bishop had a stellar college career with the Huskies. He hit .270 with 4 doubles, 0 home runs, 13 RBI and 6 stolen bases across 42 games as a freshman. Bishop took significant strides in each of the next two years, slashing a combined .300/.394/.400 during his sophomore and junior seasons. He also had a strong showing at the prestigious Cape Cod League in 2014, hitting .270 with 1 home run and 7 RBI against the best college players in the country.

Scouts were obviously enamoured with the Mountain View, CA product’s on-field tools, but his work in the community is even more impressive. Bishop’s mother Suzy was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease in September of 2014. Braden and his brother Hunter started a charity called 4MOM to help raise awareness and funds for early-onset Alzheimer’s research. Bishop is wise beyond his years, and he has handled this situation with his mother with great class.

Bishop hits and throws from the right side. He will never be a power threat, but he was an effective slap hitter in 2015. The Mariners have a lot of talented outfielders in their system, but Bishop’s combination of speed and defense sets him apart. He profiles as a player who could progress quickly through the minor-leagues.

I believe the Mariners will be aggressive with Braden Bishop in 2015. He was present at last month’s FanFest as one of the M’s top prospects. The speedy center fielder will likely begin the 2016 season in Clinton with the LumberKings. A strong start in the Midwest League could prompt a promotion to the Bakersfield Blaze of the California League. Ideally, Bishop will make his debut in the Emerald City during the 2018 season.
