Mariners Game Recap: Robinson Cano Collects 2,000th Hit in Loss

The Kansas City Royals (88-63) fought back to win in extra innings on Wednesday night against the Seattle Mariners (74-78). Wade Davis (8-1, 0.86 ERA) picked up the win for the Royals, and David Rollins (0-2, 7.88 ERA) was saddled with the loss for the M’s.

Neither team could push across a run during the first three innings, but the Royals got on the board first in the 4th inning. Kansas City took a 1-0 lead following a sacrifice fly. Seattle stormed back, taking a 3-1 lead in the top of the 5th. However, they could not quite close the Royals out. KC plated a run in the 7th, and tied the game in the bottom of the 9th inning. A Lorenzo Cain single in the 10th won it for the home side, and evened the series at a game a piece.

Roenis Elias made the start for Seattle this evening, and he managed to stay afloat despite not possessing his best stuff. The 27-year-old southpaw allowed 1 run on 4 hits across 5.1 innings pitched. Elias struck out 6, but his command was shaky, and he ended up issuing 4 free passes. The Guantanamo product generated incredible movement on his curveball, and he had the Royals swinging at air all night.

Danny Farquhar entered with 1 out and none on in the 6th. Farquhar struggled, allowing 3 hits and 1 run. Joe Beimel was called on in the 7th, and he allowed 1 hit and recorded 1 out. Carson Smith hurled 1.1 scoreless innings to give Seattle a chance to win it in the 9th. Tom Wilhelmsen blew his first save since being inserted as the M’s closer. The Bartender gave up the lead after allowing 2 hits and 2 walks. David Rollins allowed the winning run to cross the plate in the 10th.

Ketel Marte played a huge role in the Mariners’ offense tonight. The speedy leadoff man went 3 for 5 with a triple, 2 RBI and a run scored. Robinson Cano joined an exclusive club tonight, as he tallied his 2,000 career hit. Cano finished 1 for 5, and is now hitting .282 on the season. Nelson Cruz drove in his team leading, 89th run of the season tonight with a single in the 5th inning.

Yordano Ventura allowed 3 runs on 6 hits through 6 innings tonight. Ventura registered 4 punch outs and walked 1 in the no-decison. The flamethrower has electric stuff, but Seattle did a pretty nice job against Ventura. However, the Royals’ bullpen was flawless. Ryan Madson, Kelvin Herrera, Luke Hochevar and Wade Davis combined to pitch 4 shutout frames to keep Kansas City in the game.

Lorenzo Cain was the star tonight for the home side, going 3 for 6 and driving in the winning run. Eric Hosmer had a nice game, finishing 2 for 5 with 1 RBI. Salvador Perez laced a double off the center field fence in the 4th, and went 2 for 4 on the night. Alex Rios contributed a sac fly to the Royals’ cause.

With the loss, Seattle dropped to 9 games back of the Texas Rangers in the American League West. The M’s are currently 5.5 games back in the race for the final wildcard spot.

The Seattle Mariners (74-78) will battle the Kansas City Royals (88-63) in the series finale on Thursday night. First pitch is scheduled for 5:10 pm PT from Kauffman Stadium. James Paxton (3-4, 3.70 ERA) will get the ball for the Mariners in the rubber match, and Johnny Cueto (2-6, 5.12 ERA) will be on the bump for the home side. Root Sports Northwest will carry the game live locally, and MLB.tv subscribers can watch worldwide on connected devices.
