The Mariners took the series from the Texas Rangers yesterday in a continued effort to play spoiler. It’s always nice to see the M’s play well in the division, and to put a dent in someone else’s playoff chances.
These Mariners are now 73-77 with 12 games to play. They are 6.0 back in the wild card chase. The M’s aren’t going to the playoffs but with a strong finish, they could finish .500, which would be a miracle considering how this season has truly gone.
So, with your playoff hopes crushed and the Seahawks 0-2, we can gain some happiness from our friends on Twitter, who posted this:
That’s about as pretty as it gets, Mariners fans! A-Rod, Griffey, and Edgar going back-to-back-to-back. Three of the greatest Mariners in history and two beloved icons.
But the 1996 M’s did make the playoffs, going 85-77 and finishing behind the Rangers. A-Rod hit a whopping .358 last year, while Junior checked in at .303. To no one’s surprise, Edgar hit .327 with 26 homers and 103 RBIs.
Jay Buhner, not pictured in this video hit 44 homers and had 138 RBIs. The Mariners had four players with 100 RBIs that season.
My, how baseball has changed in 20 years.
And I miss the Kingdome. Like, a lot.
The Mariners begin a series with the Royals tomorrow when Hisashi Iwakuma takes the ball against Jeremy Guthrie. The M’s can continue to play spoiler as the Royals are looking to wrap up the AL Central.
Go M’s!
