Mike Zunino will not be back with the Mariners this year. They are sending him to the instructional league in Arizona to continue to work on his swing and plate approach. What does that really mean? It could mean that the M’s have given up on the former first round draft pick. Or it could be that the M’s are trying to revive a key cog in the future machine.
Lloyd McClendon says its the latter.
I tend to agree with Lloyd. Sure, I’d like to see Zunino carry over his AAA success (he mashed in Tacoma after getting sent down) into Seattle, but I think it’s more important for Zunino to work on things on the backfields of Arizona than on the diamond at Safeco Field.
Erickson gives another lengthier explanation from Lloyd.
Lloyd knows how hard it is to hit at the major league level and I trust that he has the players best interest at heart. Defensively, Zunino is one of the best in the game. The M’s can’t afford to give up on him.
Hopefully this time in Arizona helps clear his head and his brain and helps remember how to hit to the level he did at Florida.
Remember: The M’s take on the Rangers tonight at Safeco Field at 7:10. The Mariners have dropped two in a row to the Rangers after previously winning five straight contests against the Astros and A’s.
Go M’s! Beat the Rangers!
