Mariners Game Notes: Seattle Goes for Sweep in Oakland vs. A’s
This afternoon, the Seattle Mariners (65-71) have a chance to sweep the A’s (58-78) in Oakland for the first time since April 2009. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 pm from the O.co Colosseum in the East Bay. Hisashi Iwakuma (6-3, 4.22 ERA) will get the ball for the M’s in the series finale. Sean Nolin will make his 2015 debut with the Athletics today. Root Sports Northwest will carry the game live locally, and MLB.tv subscribers can follow along on connected devices.
The Mariners extended their winning streak to four games last night, which matches a season high. Seattle’s recent hot streak has allowed them to gain some ground in the American League West, as they now sit just 9 games back of the Houston Astros. The M’s are 7 games out in the wildcard race.
Mariners’ skipper Lloyd McClendon and A’s boss Bob Melvin have released the following lineups for today’s game:
Pick to Click
The M’s have been scoring runs in bunches recently, and they have received significant contributions from nearly everyone in their lineup. Stefen Romero has provided the Mariners with a shot in the arm since being recalled in early September, and I am going with the Oregon State alum as my pick to click today. Romero has posted a .429 batting average with 1 home run and 3 RBI since being called up on September 1. I am predicting the 26-year-old outfielder will double his home run tally today and drive in a pair of runs hitting out of the number three hole.

The Mariners are playing as well as they have all season right now, and I expect they will extend their wining streak to five games today. Hisashi Iwakuma hurled a no-hitter last month, and posted a 3.21 ERA through 6 starts in August. The 32-year-old should have little trouble with the lackluster A’s lineup. Sean Nolin dominated in the Pacific Coast League this season, but that does not always translate to the big league level. I predict Seattle will win the series finale 5-3 to complete their sweep of the rival A’s.
