135. 7. 62. Final. 5

The Seattle Mariners (62-71) bested the Houston Astros (73-60) on Tuesday night to even the series at a game a piece. Logan Kensing (1-0, 6.75 ERA) earned his first win in the Major Leagues in nearly six years tonight for the Mariners. Pat Neshek (3-4, 3.35 ERA) took the loss for the home side. Tom Wilhelmsen worked a perfect 9th inning to record his 7th save of the season.

Tonight’s game was the definition of a back and forth affair. The M’s were the only team to have a lead tonight, but Houston fought back to tie the game on multiple occasions. However, the Mariners could not be stopped. Seattle took a 2-run lead in the 8th, and held on for the win.

Roenis Elias was far from dominant, but he did manage to keep the Mariners in the game tonight. Elias allowed 4 runs on 5 hits across 5.1 innings pitched. The 27-year-old southpaw struck out 4 and walked 4 this evening. Elias has had some really tough outings against Houston during his career, and in comparison, Tuesday night was not too bad.

Mayckol Guaipe entered in the 6th, and proceeded to allow 1 run on 2 hits through 0.2 innings pitched. Logan Kensing held the Astros off the scoreboard in the 7th. Carson Smith has pitched much better since shifting back to the setup role, and he came through with a scoreless 8th to keep Seattle’s 2-run lead in tact.  Tom Wilhelmsen has been extremely effective as the M’s closer recently, and he shut the door once again tonight.

Logan Morrison provided the hit of the night in the top of the 8th inning. LoMo entered the game as a pinch hitter with a runner on first base and 2 out. Morrison yanked an 89 mph sinker over the wall in right field to give the M’s the lead. Franklin Gutierrez went 2 for 4 with a home run, 1 RBI, a walk and 3 runs scored. Mark Trumbo is on fire right now, and he clubbed yet another home run tonight. Trumbo has now hit three home runs in the last two games. Brad Miller did a nice job, going 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored. Kyle Seager finished 1 for 4 with an RBI and a stolen base.

Scott Feldman was chased from tonight’s game early after getting roughed up. Feldman allowed 3 runs on 3 hits through 2.2 innings. He walked 5 Mariners and struck out 2. Vincent Velasquez answered the bell for the Astros, allowing 2 runs on 3 hits through 4.1 innings in relief. Pat Neshek entered in the 8th, and surrendered the key 2-run home run that proved to be the game winning runs. Luke Gregerson held the M’s bats at bay in the 9th, but the damage had already been done.

Jose Altuve is an MVP candidate in 2015, and he set the tone for the Astros’ offense tonight. The diminutive second baseman went 2 for 4 with a walk, an RBI and a stolen base. Jake Marisnick also had a big night, finishing 2 for 3 with a solo home run and 2 runs scored. Max Stassi and Carlos Gomez were responsible for the other Houston runs on Tuesday.
