Mariners Analysis: The Difference Between the Mariners and the Seahawks

I wish the Mariners could make me feel this good all the time (Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports).

There didn’t used to be one. I used to think of them the same. I’ve been a pessimistic fan my whole life, because that’s how the Mariners and Seahawks made me.

I’ve never looked clearly at sports. I’ve always watched them through jaded, fan-centric eyes. I’ve annoyed my family and friends for years, predicting bad things to happen as each game goes on.

For instance, just last week — I called Mark Teixeira’s grand slam off Felix. Just as I called a late-inning Luis Valbuena homer earlier in the season. I’ve just seen these things happen too many times to not expect them now.

I used to think that with the Seahawks too. “Here comes a pick…” “Don’t fumble…” “Oh, where’s the flag to take that play back?” I’ve said it — and thought it all.

Three years ago, the day of the Seahawks opener in Arizona, I remember tweeting that I was “cautiously optimistic” for the Seahawks season because I liked Russell Wilson. The Seahawks are good now, and I’ve finally let myself believe in them. To the point where I wasn’t shocked by Wilson’s unreal two-point conversion in the NFC Championship against the Packers, or really any of the things that he does.

I now expect good things to happen to the Seahawks. Malcolm Butler’s interception in the Super Bowl? I now just attribute that to bad luck and a good play, rather than some cataclysmic event that I saw coming.

That’s the difference between the Mariners and Seahawks. The Mariners haven’t allowed me to get into that frame of mind.

I honestly wasn’t watching last night when Fernanndo Rodney gave up the home run in the ninth inning.

And to be perfectly honest, it shouldn’t come down to Fernando Rodney. It was the offense that couldn’t muster one run. You should win games like the one last night.

There didn’t used to be a difference between the Mariners and Seahawks.

Now there is. The Seahawks give me hope that they can win a game like that.

The Mariners don’t. Yet.
