Seattle Mariners: Jesus Montero Sighting In Peoria

Seattle Mariners pitchers and catchers officially report tomorrow, but several players were already showing up in Peoria and getting ready for what promises to be an exciting season.

One of the early surprises is that of Jesus Montero. Remember? He reported to camp last year about 40 pounds over where he was at the end of the previous season.

Check out this tweet from Seattle Times beat writer Ryan Divish:

And after a season of fat jokes, harsh criticisms from the organization and even a scout sending him an ice cream sandwich while playing the minors, it seems as if Montero is quite literally, half the man he used to be.

In case you need a refresher, this is what Montero looked like at the start of Spring Training last season (right).

Whether Montero can make the team out of camp is yet to be seen, but critics of Montero’s can’t deny that he at least appears to be focused.

This club needs a backup first baseman. Maybe not on the active roster, but they need to know that if something happens to Logan Morrison, that they can call on someone to fill the hole and not feel like it’s a huge step down.

Montero has all the potential in the world. It would be nice to see Montero shine in spring and make this club. If for no other reason, that it makes for a great story.

Can you feel it? The season is about to start. More news from Peoria as the boys in blue get ready to roll.
