Mariners Talk Podcast 2014 Final Episode

Sunday night, Mariners Talk powered by SodoMojo.com got our “official” 2015 season started with introducing the surprise that I told you guys about. Our new intro and outro theme songs which were the old television openings from the early 90’s Mariners broadcasts.

Following that both Sodo Mojo writer Jon O’Connor and Steve Sandmeyer from 1090 The Fan joined the show.

We started off the podcast by of course congratulating the Seattle Seahawks on becoming 2014 NFC West Champions but then we started our Mariners talk.

Sandmeyer began the show by answering the question I asked him about what he thought about the Mariners off season so far.

Steve responded by saying that “Its an incomplete grade” and what Steve meant by that was that the off season isn’t over so we cant quite put a grade on the off season.

Steve also put in his take about the Justin Ruggiano and the Michael Saunders deal, along with saying that “this roster in my opinion, is probably only 2/3 of the way finished.”

Jon jumped in finishing up the first topic talking about what Steve said, in finishing the roster and adding that one or two extra bats that will help the Mariners this upcoming season.

We then got into the discussion about both James Paxton and Taijuan Walker getting traded. Steve said that Taijuan would be the most likely to be moved.

He didn’t say who the Mariners would trade for but he said that “James Paxton is not going anywhere” so we can take into account that he’s not going anywhere. Steve did say though that he wouldn’t want those two guys to go though, but he would be “moderately surprised” if Walker got moved for an everyday right fielder.

  • Steve did say though that there is a guy out there that people aren’t discussing about a trade for,  so we need to keep our eye out for that.

Before we got into the Edgar Martinez Hall of Fame discussion we talked about James Jones, Joe Beimel, and Carson Smith, about their roles for next season.

Steve said that he “loves the kid speed, I love his ‘want to’ but he’s way over his skies.” He also said that he really has no idea where Jones will end up next season but if injuries hit the team Jones will see time up in the majors, but he should remain in Triple-A Tacoma to get those necessary reps he need.

Sandmeyer had nothing but good things to say about both Beimel and Smith. On Beimel, Sandmeyer said that he would “love to have him back” but we did take our shots at both Yoervis Medina and Steve took his shot at Charlie Furbush.

When the topic came up about Smith though both Steve and Jon thought the idea of him becoming a possible closer within the next 2 years. Steve said that “Carson Smith has future closer written all over him” he also said that Smith is “an absolute stud”.

Finally we got into the EdgarHOF talk. Steve said it best that “if they are going to put closers in the HOF, they need to put DH’s in the HOF”. And yes Steve had the best point of the conversation. Why put closers in the Hall of Fame but not a DH?

But then I got into talking about when Ken Griffey, Jr., goes into the HOF I gave the thought of both Jr and Edgar going in together and both Steve and Jon ate it up and I think I could hear their emotions on that thought when they were giving their takes.

Wrapping up the podcast me and Steve got a little distracted but gave our thoughts on just how baseball brings not only the fans together but our families as well, and we then talked about how the city would react if the Mariners were to win the World Series and how much it would mean to the fans and the city of Seattle.
