Mariners Players Honored By BBWAA

Before Friday’s game against the Angels at Safeco Field, the Baseball Writers’ Association of America announced the Mariners team awards for the 2014 season.

All-Star second baseman Robinson Cano was named the Player of the Year.

Without the contributions of Cano, the Mariners wouldn’t be in the position they are in currently. While some of his numbers have been down from recent years (14 HR, 82 RBI), Cano is 5th in the American League with a .316 batting average, 5th in on-base percentage (.384) and 7th in doubles (37).

Cano, as we all know, signed a 10-year $240 million contract with the Mariners this past offseason. His presence was felt in the lineup immediately and if the team can get another bat or two to help protect him, this will prove to have been an amazing investment.

Felix Hernandez, likely one of the finalists for the AL Cy Young award, was named the Pitcher of the Year.

Felix was enjoying an amazing season early on. But lack of run support cost him a chance at his first 20-win season.

Despite that, Felix is 14-6 with a 2.18 ERA (2nd in the AL) with a career-high 241 strikeouts (4th in the AL) with a .203 BAA and a league-best 0.94 WHIP in 33 starts.

Hernandez also set a Major League record this season when he rattled off 16 consecutive starts of 7 IP or more while allowing two runs or fewer.

The Mariners’ Unsung Hero Award went to starting pitcher Chris Young.

Young, who was signed at the last minute during Spring Training after being released by the Nationals. Young started the season strong, especially at home. He tired down the stretch and was ultimately placed in the bullpen by manager Lloyd McClendon.

Young tied a career-high with 12 wins (with nine losses) and has an ERA of 3.65 in 29 starts (30 total appearances).

Unrelated to the BBWAA awards, but also relevant, is the fact that third baseman Kyle Seager was given the Mariners’ Heart and Hustle Award by the Major League Baseball Players’ Alumni Association.

The Mariners wrap up their season with two more against the Angels tonight and Sunday.
