The Angels Clinch the West While C.J. Wilson Embarrasses the Mariners Offense
Justin Smoak hit a single off of C.J. Wilson in the top of the 5th inning. And that was it.
The Mariners were collectively one-hit by the Angels on a night where James Paxton was dealing, even though his final stat line is skewed by things beyond his control.
In the 7th of a 0-0 ball game, Paxton allowed a single to the leadoff man. Then, a bloop-type shot to right center. Chris Denorfia took a bad route to the ball and was forced to play it off an awkward hop. The ball skipped past him and netted the Angels their first run of the game. An undeserved earned run for Paxton. Then Paxton intentionally walked Erick Aybar before striking out catcher Chris Iannetta.
Paxton was then pulled from the game and replaced by Danny Farquhar with 2-outs in the inning. There were men on 1st and 2nd.
On a first pitch hanging slider, C.J. Cron tomahawked the ball to deep left-center field for a 3-run homer. In an instant the Mariners were down 4-0, and Paxton was charged with 3 earned runs he did not deserve.
Aside from that, Farquhar managed to allow another run to score, and the way the M’s were hitting that was all they needed.
Congratulations to the Angels for clinching the AL West as Oakland lost to the Rangers last night.
Now the Mariners sit two games back of both Oakland and the Kansas City Royals in the Wild Card race.
