The Seattle Mariners have decided not to retain the services of Butch Baccala, the high-ranking Mariners scout who purchased an ice cream sandwich for Jesus Montero during a rehab assignment late last month.

Montero was coaching first base for the Class-A (Short season) Everett Aquasox on August 28th. It is alleged that Baccala then heckled Montero for not hustling off the field fast enough.

According the original reports, Baccala then purchased an ice cream sandwich for Montero and had it delivered to him in the dugout.

Jesus Montero has been the subject of media and fan scrutiny for the past year as he was suspended for 50 games last season for testing positive for performance enhancing drugs. He then reported to Spring Training 40 pounds overweight.

Shortly thereafter, Montero went into the stands with a bat and the sandwich, to confront Baccala, allegedly throwing the ice cream back at the scout.

Montero was suspended by the Mariners for the remainder of the season and sent home. But the punishment for Baccala is much worse, being let go entirely by the organization.

According to reports, Seattle GM Jack Zduriencik and his team conducted a full investigation into this matter, but are still not ready to release their findings.
