Mariners Win Opener In Detroit, Regain Wild-Card Spot

To say that the Seattle Mariners have been up to the challenge of late would be a vast understatement. After sweeping the Toronto Blue Jays at home, the Mariners took game one of a crucial three-game series in Detroit, 7-2.

In doing so, the Mariners swapped places with the Tigers, reclaiming the 2nd wild-card spot by a half game over Detroit.

James Paxton pitched six innings allowing just one earned run to move to 3-0 on the season and remain unbeaten at the Major League level.

The Mariners played a lot of small ball Friday, collecting 10 hits and scoring six runs (five earned) off Rick Porcello who had given up only four earned runs in his previous four starts combined.

Robinson Cano hit his 11th homer of the season, but the other runs were scored off singles, a double play and a double steal.

The win for Seattle is their 5th straight and 9th in their last 11.

Game two Saturday is the marquee matchup as Felix Hernandez squares off against David Price. Felix is undefeated at Comerica Park (9-0 in 11 games).
