Dustin Ackley Leads Off, Leads Mariners to W in Cleveland

Fear the Beard! so they say. The Mariners bats woke up in Cleveland on Tuesday en route to a 5-2 victory at Progressive Field.

The offensive action began in the top of the 4th when Kyle Seager bunt singled to third base to beat the Tribe’s shift. Then catcher Mike Zunino was hit by a pitch (that has happened a lot this season), before Logan Morrison lined out softly to Jason Kipnis at second base.

Right fielder Corey Hart then doubled– just his 3 extra-base hit (all doubles) since returning from the DL– scoring Seager and moving Zunino to 3rd. Struggling James Jones struck out swinging in the 9-hole before the lineup turned over to the hot hitting Dustin Ackley.

Ack, now hitting .390 in the month of July, cranked a double to right field and off the wall at the 375 marker. That scored two more runs to give the Mariners a 3-0 lead.

But that wasn’t the end in the 4th. Recently called up shortstop Chris Taylor joined the hit parade with a run-scoring double, driving in Ackley and pushing the lead to 4-0.

Hisashi Iwakuma had another solid performance, going 7 innings while allowing only 2 earned runs in the bottom of the 5th.

Mike Zunino also tomahawked a homer over the left field wall in the 5th, bringing his season total to 16– tied with Seager for the team lead and most by any catcher in the American League.

Kendrys Morales went 0-5 on the night with 3 strikeouts, and has not yet proved he is the guy to bat cleanup behind Robinson Cano in this lineup.

The win brought the Mariners to 55-51, as the Angels lost to the Orioles in extra innings. Unfortunately both the Yankees and Blue Jays won their games against Texas and the Red Sox, respectively.
