Chris Sale Quiets Mariners Hot Bats As White Sox Win Opener

facebooktwitterreddit

Hot and cold, the Seattle Mariners have made sub-.500 pitchers look like All-Stars and on occasion, stuck it to Cy Young-calbier pitchers. Not today.

Chicago’s Chris Sale pitched a complete game six-hitter, striking out 12 Mariners and three White Sox went yard as they took the opening game of the series 7-1 on Independence Day.

On America’s birthday, it was two Cubans – Dayan Viciedo and Jose Abreu – roughing up their countryman Roenis Elias, handing Seattle only their third loss in their last 13 games.

It was Viciedo who struck first, with a solo homer to lead off the bottom of the 4th. The White Sox struck for four more in the 5th including a homer by Jose Abreu, who now has 27 on the season.

More from Mariners News

Viciedo has been the subject of multiple trade rumors, specifically with the Mariners. He did his part in trying to entice the Mariners Friday, going 4-for-4 with his 10th homer of the season and two runs scored.

It is my belief that the Mariners will get something done to acquire Viciedo and possibly SS Alexei Ramirez by the end of this series in Chicago.

Willie Bloomquist scored the Mariners’ lone run, batting at the top of the order and getting the start at shortstop. But lefties were hitting .089 against Sale this season coming into the game, and this lefty-dominated lineup did exactly as predicted against Sale.

The Mariners look to lick their wounds and regroup with Felix Hernandez on the mound today. Happy Felix Day everyone!
