Fernando Rodney Blows 2nd Save Of Season

The Seattle Mariners just couldn’t figure out David Price. Perhaps the M’s should trade for him just so they don’t have to face him anymore.

It was the pitching matchup everyone thought it would be. Hisashi Iwakuma vs Price. ‘Kuma actually bested Price, having a 1-0 lead going into the 9th.

Then, the Fernando Rodney roller coaster ride took a steep drop down and all hell broke loose. David DeJesus led off the inning with a game-tying solo homer. After getting the next two batters out, it appeared that we were going to the 10th.

Rodney had other ideas. Three straight singles scored the go-ahead run and Rodney walked the next batter to load the bases before finally getting the hook from skipper Lloyd McClendon.

Danny Farquhar came in and got Ryan Hanigan on three pitches to end the inning. But the Mariners had to face Price in the bottom of the 9th and he was able to get Robinson Cano, Corey Hart and Justin Smoak in order to end the game.

Iwakuma is now 2-0 (should be 3-0) in his first three starts of 2014 with an ERA of 1.59. He was out of gas after the 8th as this is only his 3rd start with no spring training.

Price gave up six hits including four doubles, but he struck out 12 M’s as the team went 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position, something they had been better at so far this season.

In fact, the only run the Mariners scored was on a fielder’s choice grounder hit by Cano that scored James Jones from 3rd in the 1st inning.

Speaking of Vader – yes, that is James Jones’ nickname from here on out. He has at least one hit in every game he has started, is batting .370 overall and is 5-for-16 with five runs in four games since moving into the leadoff role.

The Mariners have still gone 13-6 since snapping that dreaded eight-game losing streak on April 23, putting their record at 20-19. Today’s game marks the 1/4 point in the season.
