It’s a new season. The Seattle Mariners have clawed their way back to an even record (15-15) and are just three games back of 1st place as they took the opener of a four-game series in Oakland 4-2.
The Mariners were last at or above .500 on April 16th when they were 7-7. They are 5-1 on their current road trip.
The new-look top of the order continued to produce as Michael Saunders and Stefen Romero went a combined 4-for-5 with three runs scored.
Chris Young looked sharp again, going 6 IP allowing only three hits and two runs while walking two. His only big mistake was a two-run homer off the bat of Brandon Moss in the 4th inning.
In a shocking turn of events, the bullpen was spectacular. As Charlie Furbush, Dominic Leone, Joe Beimel and Yoervis Medina combined for two innings of near-perfect relief, allowing just one hit and one walk.
Fernando Rodney came in and pitched a perfect 9th to get his 8th save.
The highlight of the game came in the top of the 5th with the score knotted at 2-2. Stefen Romero stepped up and hit a bomb to left, for his first Major League homer. That gave the Mariners the lead, which they held. So Romero is the Player of the Game. Check out the video below.
The series continues tomorrow as Roenis Elias takes the mound for the Mariners. Jesse Chavez gets the start for the Athletics.
