The Cincinnati Reds blew an 8-0 lead in the 5th, only to regain the lead in the 8th and hang on, beating the Seattle Mariners 10-9 in Peoria Friday.
The Reds struck first and struck often, lighting up Mariners starter Randy Wolf to the tune of three hits and four runs including two homers (one by Chris Heisey and one by Brandon Phillips).
The Reds then greeted Ramon Ramirez with another hit, two walks and three more runs in the 5th. Logan Bawcom came in and gave up another run before retiring the side on the 5th.
But in the bottom of the 5th, the Mariners’ bats woke up. Kyle Seager and Nick Franklin led off the inning with walks and after Justin Smoak singled to load the bases, Corey Hart grounded out to third, scoring the first run of the game.
After a wild pitch scored the second run, Dustin Ackley singled to score Smoak to cut the deficit to 8-3.
In the bottom of the 6th, with two outs, D.J. Peterson hit a solo shot to make it a 8-4 lead for the Reds. Ketel Marte then walked and stole second, advancing to third on the throw. Jesus Montero then doubled in Marte.
Stefen Romero tripled in Montero and after an Xavier Avery walk, Cole Gillespie doubled scoring both Romero and Avery to tie the game at 8-8.
But Cincinnati answered in the top of the 8th. Nick Hill allowed a single, triple and a double, scoring two before ending the inning with a 6-4-3 double play.
The Mariners got one back in the bottom of the 8th on another RBI single by Gillespie. But the Reds were able to hold on in the 9th to get the win.
