It was looking as if the road Mariners were going to drop consecutive games. But Chris Taylor had other ideas.
Trailing 5-2 in the top of the 7th, Taylor his a go-ahead grand slam and the Mariners were able to hold on to defeat the Reds 6-5 in Goodyear, Ariz. Monday.
In split-squad action for Seattle, the team that played the Reds was mostly second-stringers taking on the Reds starting unit.
The Reds jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the third thanks in part to three fielding errors, one by Logan Morrison, the others by Nate Tenbrink on the same play. All three errors came with two outs in the inning and allowed a total of three unearned runs to score.
But the Mariners came back.
A Mike Zunino RBI-double in the 4th, a solo homer by Brad Miller in the 6th and then the bomb by Taylor to take the lead in the 7th.
Only two earned runs were given up in the game by Seattle pitching. One by Erasmo Ramirez, the other by Charlie Furbush. Yoervis Medina and Nick Hill pitched a perfect 8th and 9th innings. Hill striking out the side on nine pitches.
