**UPDATE** at the bottom of the story

The Seattle Mariners are nearing a one-year deal with free agent outfielder Franklin Gutierrez according to Jon Morosi via Twitter. Gutierrez has had an injury-plagued few seasons, missing 313 games over the past three seasons.

The Mariners are in need of some right-handed bats and a centerfielder, Gutierrez gives them both. For how long next season is yet to be seen. However, Morosi goes on to say that the team is encouraged by reports of his health.

He won a Gold Glove in 2010 and earned the nickname “Death to Flying Things” by the late Dave Niehaus. The signing will more than likely mean the end of the Mariners’ interest in both Shin-Soo Choo and Nelson Cruz.

I guess we are starting to see what the Mariners outfield will look like in 2014.

More details on the contract as they become available.

UPDATE- According to Enrique Rojas of ESPN Deportes, the two sides have agreed on a  1-year $1M deal where Gutierrez is able to earn an additional $2M in incentives.
