6th Round Pick
Corey Simpson
Ourfielder from Sweeny High School in Sweeny, Texas
19 years old
Bats/ Throws R/R
6’2” 210 pounds
Brief Thoughts:
Simpson is another catcher who is being moved to the outfield by the Mariners, which makes sense because his glove was well below average behind the plate. He did posses a decent arm as a catcher which should translate to outfield. Regardless, the Mariners are buying Simpson’s plus power with this pick. While the power is impressive, it is unclear whether or not he will hit for enough average to allow his raw power to play up. Simpson could become a less dramatic version of Carlos Peguero down the road.
7th Round Pick
Tyler Olson
Pitcher from Gonzaga University
23 years old
Bats/ Throws R/L
6’3” 195 pounds
College Stats: 101.2 IP, 2.48 ERA, .249 BAA, 91 strikeouts, 31 walks
Brief Thoughts:
Olson is a different kind of selection because he is already 23 years old. While that doesn’t give him much time to progress, he may not need it because he already has fairly refined stuff as a left-hander. His fastball sits in the mid to upper 80’s but he locates it very well. In addition, Olson brings a good curveball and nice changeup. Olson doesn’t have much untapped potential, so this is more of a short term move. If all goes well, Olson could be a major league reliever within the next two seasons.
