Let’s Talk About Josh Wilson

During this recent Josh Wilson hot streak, in which he’s filled in nicely for injured shortstop Jack Wilson, I’ve heard some crazy things. I’ve heard someone tell me that Josh has been better for the Mariners so far than Jack has, and I’ve heard someone say that Josh Wilson is as good a defender as Jack Wilson.

I don’t want to write a long article about these two things, as I want to write some post-game notes, so I’ll just address them quickly. First of all, yes, Josh Wilson, statistically, has done more for the Mariners than Jack Wilson. Does this mean anything? No. Does this mean Josh Wilson is a good player? No. All it means is that he’s on a little hot streak, and Jack Wilson has gotten off to somewhat of a slow start with Seattle. Don’t get me wrong – I have nothing against Josh Wilson, and I’m glad that he’s hitting, he’s just not a very good player, and has no future with the Mariners.

As for their defense, it’s not close. Josh has played solid D with the Mariners, but that’s an 8 game sample size. History shows Jack Wilson as being an outstanding defensive shortstop, and it shows Josh as being somewhere between mediocre and bad. I am nothing but grateful for the offensive boost Josh Wilson has provided for this team over the last week or so, but it’s not something he’s going to keep doing, and he isn’t nearly as good as Jack.

Also, I feel like the ridiculous amount of times I said the word Wilson in this post is going to annoy some people. Sorry about that.
