We Might be in Trouble

The Mariners have gotten a good dose of bad news over the last day or so. First, it was Jack Wilson being pulled from the game last night with what turned out to be a grade 1 hamstring tear, meaning he may end up on the disabled list. Just in case, shortstop Josh Wilson was recalled from Triple A Tacoma.

Who did we get rid of to make room for Wilson you may ask? Well, that’s where the other piece of bad news comes in. Adrian Beltre was hit in the crotch with a hard ground ball last night – and he doesn’t wear a cup. So today we found out he has a tear in his testicle, it’s apparently very swollen, and he’s been placed on the 15 day DL. We’ll know in the next 48 hours whether or not it’s going to require surgery, and if that’s the case he’ll be out for at least a month. Due to the fact that the minor league season will be over and he won’t be able to make any rehab starts, I wouldn’t be surprised if he was done for the season. I would say there’s probably about a 50% chance that Adrian Beltre has played his last game as a Seattle Mariner.

So if Jack Wilson is forced to go on the DL too, that’s going to put this team in a very awkward place. We have Hannahan to fill in at third base, and he does a good job there, but a Hannahan-Josh Wilson combo at third and short isn’t anywhere near as good as a Beltre-Jack Wilson combo. As in, this team is significantly worse today than it was yesterday. Not good considering we’re still on the fringe of a pennant race. The Mariners have sustained a lot of seemingly crushing blows this season, but something tells me this may be the one that finally does it. As I’ve said so many times this year, I guess we’ll have to wait and see.
