Derek Holland two hits the Mariners

The big story in the Mariners news today came from a 22 year old left handed pitcher in Derek Holland.

He had the Mariners hitters off balance all night long. He did an amazing  job of switching his pitches up and changing speeds. He carried a perfect game into the 5th where Jack Hannahan hit a little broken bat blooper on an 0-2 count up the middle. He showed tonight why the Blue Jays insist that he is involved in any deal that would have to do with Roy Halladay.

As for the Mariners starter, Garrett Olson, he did not do quite as well. He has had very rough outings for the last 3 or 4 starts, and it would not get any better tonight against one of the better offenses in the league. He wasn’t able to save the bullpen at all, only going 3.2 innings, giving up 4 ER on 6 hits and 2 BB.  He was pulled from the rotation after his outing against the tigers in which he gave up 5 runs before getting a single out. He was then put back into the rotation after news that Bedard had shoulder stiffness.

The game was awful, but the Mariners are hoping to  rebound with Jason Vargas taking the mound and gain some ground on the second place Rangers by winning the next 3 games in the 4 game series, which starts tomorrow in Arlington, Texas at 5:05 PM PT.
