Washburn to Brewers Rumor

Yet another trade rumor has surfaced today, this time via Geoff Baker’s blog over at the Seattle Times. The rumored deal would send Jarrod Washburn, and from what I’ve heard Brandon Morrow, to the Brewers, in exchange for top shortstop prospect Alcides Escobar, and according to Geoff Baker, maybe another minor league player.

You already know about Washburn and Morrow, so I’ll talk about Escobar. Escobar is 22 years old, and pretty much MLB ready. He doesn’t hit for much power, but he has the ability to hit for a high average, with a lot of stolen bases. He’s really fast.

He’s not just a hitter, either. He’s an outstanding defensive shortstop, maybe the best in the minor leagues. He has tons of range, a cannon for an arm, and great hands. He’s the type of player that would be ready to be the Mariners starting shortstop immediately if we acquired him – something he doesn’t have the opportunity to do in Milwaukee, due to being blocked by JJ Hardy.

I would be ecstatic if the Mariners were able to land Escobar for only Washburn and Morrow. I still like Morrow’s potential, but he isn’t anywhere near the level of Escobar. As for Washburn, he’s really no use to us if we’re not in a playoff race, which we really aren’t anymore.

Apparently the rumor is that if this trade is going to happen, it will probably happen by tomorrow, so we’ll see tomorrow I guess. What’s also there to think about is the fact that Jack Zduriencik knows that Brewers system like the back of his hand. If any GM is going to get a good deal from the Brewers, it’s probably going to be him.
