The Seattle Mariners signed Edward Lee Lucas to a minor league deal and will be invited to Major League camp.
Ed Lucas is a 33 year old right handed infielder. He can play all four positions in the infield. The 6-foot-3 210 pound infielder spent last season playing for AAA Roundrock in the Pacific Coast League in the Texas Rangers Minor League system. He hit .316/.389/.420. His contact rate was 78.3% ((AB-K)/AB).

In 12 seasons in the Minor Leagues the right hander has a career slash line of .282/.355/.400 and a contact rate of 80%. Offensively this is exactly what new Mariners General Manager Jerry Dipoto is targeting and this signing is consistent with his philosophy. Needing to work during the offseason while in the Minor Leagues, Ed Lucas took jobs in construction, substitute teaching, bartending, and as a temp for the Charles Schwab Corporation. Some of you might be interested to know that the Seattle Mariners might just have another bartender.
Lucas did play two seasons in the Major Leagues. He played with the Miami Marlins in 2013 and 2014 for a total of 163 games. He achieved a slash line of .255/.302/.323 and a contact rate of 76%. While the numbers are slightly lower than his Minor League numbers, the contact rate is fairly consistent with his history.

It’s easy to make the jump to the conclusion that Jerry Dipoto and his staff believe that Lucas can have some success given the opportunity and that he has just been unlucky. It has been said that Ed Lucas will get an opportunity to be the right handed backup for Adam Lind and will get a chance to compete with Jesus Montero for that position.
One thing is for certain here, the Seattle Mariners are strategically collecting players to compete for positions on the 25 man roster and there will be plenty of new faces at Spring Training. Ed Lucas will be one of those faces. Jerry Dipoto and his staff continue to build around the core of the Seattle Mariners. This most likely won’t be the last move that the Seattle Mariners make to this revamped roster.
