M’s Front Office Notes: Jack Z Replacements?

facebooktwitterreddit

It’s such an odd predicament. The guy isn’t even fired yet and we are openly talking about his replacement.

Jack Z is still the Mariners general manager. He is still trying to make the Mariners better. But as of this moment, people think he’s all but gone in Seattle. All except Jack Z…

First off, let me say this: Do I think the Mariners lack of wins over the last seven years is entirely his fault? No. A resounding no.

After Bill Bavasi, anyone was going to be better. So I’m a bit biased. I think I’m more upset at the player development staff than I am at the man who drafted or traded for players. Brandon Morrow. Dustin Ackley. Justin Smoak. The list goes on. Those can’t all be misses by Jack Z. The blame has to fall on someone else at somepoint as well.

Taijuan Walker is a success. He’ll continue to be a success. James Paxton will too. And Jack Z didn’t trade them a la Bavasi in an ill-fated deal. Sure, Danny Hultzen has been a bust, but can you really blame injury on the general manager?

So, even if Jack Z is gone, I won’t pile on and say it’s all his fault. But if he is gone, what are we hearing about replacements?

Kevin Towers is the former GM of the Padres. He’s now a special assistant for the Reds. Kenny Williams is the GM of the White Sox, he could be in the mix, according to Nightengale.

I don’t really care who the name is in the front office. I just want someone who delivers a winner.

Is that too much to ask?

Go M’s!
