The Marlins let the MLB world know that they were trying to offload their relievers this year at the trade deadline. While the team wasn't playing good, they found themseleves in an enviable position as a team with a handful of relievers that a lot of teams wanted. The Mariners were looking for help in the pen still, and were able to come to a deal with the Marlins to bring back a face that may be familiar to some Mariners fans.

Only a few years ago, the Mariners had half a season from JT Chargois. He threw 30 innings for the team back in 2021 before being traded to the Rays, alongside Austin Shenton, for Diego Castillo. Now, 3 years later, the Mariners have made a deal with the Marlins to bring him back to Seattle.

This isn't quite a rental acquisition either, as Chargois has 1.5 years left before becoming a free agent, and will see arb 3 next season. If he can finish out 2024 strong, he is going to be in line for a nice raise after only receiving $1.25M in 2024. Through 16.2 innings this season, he's had a 1.62 ERA. Be wary, fans, as his FIP, WHIP, BABIP, and BB/9 all reflect poorly for a strong finish.

It's still a nice pick-up, grabbing a reliever who, when healthy, has been really good. You add him alongside Yimi Garcia, and the Mariners now have a new look bullpen, and one that could be quite dangerous when Gabe Speier comes back from his recent demotion to AAA as he works to get back to full health.

The Mariners sent out 23-year-old Will Schomberg, a right-handed starting pitcher who has split time between Everett and Modesto this season, rocking a very solid combined 2.83 ERA through 92.1 innings of work. He wasn't in the Mariners top 30 prospects, so it's a very low risk move for the Mariners to grab a helpful bullpen piece.

JT Chargois has shown massive GB rates in the past, and the Mariners will look to see him return to that through the last two months of the season. Stay tuned as we here more, but it looks like this is a straight up 1-1 trade as of now.
