The Mariners surprised the baseball world with a move Monday afternoon, and one that some fans have actually been clamoring to see happen. While there was a lot of focus on how the Mariners have tried to fix their lineup via the trades of Randy Arozarena and Justin Turner, it was someone else entirely that was the focus of today's breaking news.
The Mariners signed Victor Robles to a 2 year extension, and on top of that, a third-year team option for 2027. It comes in as a 2YR/$9.75M extension, and could possibly turn into a 3YR/$18.5M deal if the Mariners pick up that 2027 option.
Even though he hasn't been with the Mariners long, he has shown every bit of the prospect that many thought he would turn into since coming to Seattle. He's hitting .303/.372/.450 through\42 games with the Mariners with 3 homers, 12 steals, and a K rate of just 16.3%.
The Mariners signed Victor Robles to a possible 3 Year extension
The Mariners have drastically needed offense all season, and Robles came in at just the right time. When he was signed, he seemed like nothing more than a platoon with some surprisingly good numbers in that role recently. Instead, they seemed to strike gold, and have decided to reward Victor Robles with quite the nice contract.
While it isn't the same as going out and getting a big name, it's still nice to see the rare occurrence of the Mariners paying a hitter that they essentially got as a Free Agent. I don't know that Robles can keep it up, but the outfield versatility, the speed, the bit of power, the great eye at the plate, and the excitement that he brings to this team are 100% worth it if he can perform anywhere near what we have seen so far.
Congratulations to the Mariners and Victor Robles on the new contract. Let's hope that it is more than just striking gold on a former prospect, and turns into a great value deal above and beyond what it already looks like.
