Mariners potential Target #2: Yandy Diaz
Jon Morosi also mentions Yandy Diaz as a target for the Mariners to fill their need for a high contact get on base type hitter. The Mariners have already made a trade with the Rays this offseason, acquiring catcher Blake Hunt for catcher Tatem Levins. It seems like the Rays and Mariners have had a million trades since Jerry Dipoto became the GM. Seems like they have a good relationship when it comes to making trades.
Yandy Diaz is 31 years old and has 2 more years left on his contract with and club option for 2026. He is also relatively cheap. Diaz is scheduled to make $8 million in 2024, $10 million in 2025, and $12 million in 2026 if the club option is exercised. Which means he will be more expensive in trade to acquire.
In 2023 Diaz had a phenomenal year for the Rays. Just look at these numbers, Diaz had a slash line of .330/.410/.522, he had an OPS+ of 158, with 22 home runs, 78 RBI, and 95 runs. Diaz has been putting up numbers like this his whole career and can play first base and third base. He is definitely someone the Mariners should try to acquire. We know the Mariners don't like to sign free agent bats so if this is the other option for this offseason then sign me up. Get it done Jerry.
