We are really starting to get into the season. It's not the dog days of summer yet, but with 45+ games under the Mariners belt, trends are starting to become realities. You can excuse the first few weeks of the season, or any bad stretch by a player. It happens. When that stretch lengthens out to a month or more, it starts to become a bigger issue.

There's also the perception of things. Whether or not they are earned, a player can be looked at by a fan base and have a bad (awful, horrendous, or insanely troubling) stretch stick with them. That's where we are today, as I wanted to look at 3 Mariners that the fans have already lost their patience with.

The team is 22-24, they can't find any offense, and near-elite pitching is the only thing keeping this team holding on so far. If not for the staff, we might just be looking at a team with a 15-31 record. That's how bad the offense has been. A big part of the article today is going to be about that offense, so let's dive right in and see who the first entry is for Mariners that fans have had enough of already.

Mariners fans are fed up with Kolten Wong

I'm still on Wong's side, and I think anyone following me knows that. He's hitting .279/.340/.349/ from April 23 through May 21, and has been good at the plate.

Here's the thing. I know that fans are tired of him, and it's still understandable. What they are getting form Wong is not enough, and he needs to continue turning it around and to play better, or else they are still looking at an issue at second base. It doesn't help that D-Mo is out still, although it sounds like he is getting closer and closer to coming back.

I think a big part of the continued dislike for Wong has to do with the emergence of Jose Caballero. He has been fun to watch, and has been playing pretty darn good as well. He's hitting just north of .300 over that same time frame as Wong, but with more walks, higher slugging, and more runs/RBI. His defense has been better too.

I think my favorite part, and likely many a fans reason, is how he messes with the pitcher during the pitch clock. You don't have to look up until 8 seconds, and he makes sure to milk as much time as he can while he is in the box before he looks up. It throws pitchers off, and puts the AB into his favor.

As for Wong, he needs to get back to his 2020-ish ability. Show the Mariners that you can play good defense, steal some bases, and hit a bomb every once in a while. He hasn't done any of that in 2023, and as each day passes, it looks like he is going to be the next "answer" at second to leave after just a single disappointing season.

Mariners fans are fed up with AJ Pollock

I was happy when they signed AJ Pollock in the offseason. Honestly, I am happy when they sign anyone that can slot into a need on the team, even if they aren't the biggest or flashiest acquisition.

Pollock was supposed to play alongside Kelenic in Left. Kelenic would hit righties, and sit against Lefties. It would be the opposite for Pollock, as he would get those ABS vs southpaws. He was good against them, and spending $7M on one year of a platoon player that should've been a big help to the lineup made a lot of sense.

Except, he hasn't done that. He's hitting .152/.207/.342 on the season through 79 AB, and it's been worse that he has come up clutch a couple of times, because he literally hasn't done a single other thing good for the Mariners. He's been absolute garbage against LHP, hitting just .079/.143/.158 in 38 AB. That's 3-38. awful. I'm tired of it, and I'd rather see the free swinging Trammell out there. Or give Marlowe or someone of his ilk a shot. At least they might do something at the plate and on defense.

The Mariners already got rid of La Stella, a signing that made no sense at the time and was made to look worse with every AB. It's starting to be the same with Pollock, who is actually hitting .143/.208/.143 since those heroics in Oakland at the start of the month, just 3-21. Gross.

Mariners fans are fed up with Chris Flexen

Oh, I want to be a Flexen fan, I really do. He did so good for this team in 2021 and 2022, holding down a spot in the rotation in old school fashion. He wasn't striking guys out, and he wasn't going to dominate. However, you were going to get 5/6 innings and 2/3 ER every single time out, and he was consistent about it.

2023 has been totally different. I don't think it stems back to late-2022 when they moved him to the bullpen, either. He did great there, so i think this has to be something else. Maybe it's a holdover from it, and he just wasn't in the right place for it in 2023. The move back to a starter destroyed him, and made a lot of fans sour on him. You could ask plenty of fans, and they might not even know where he is.

The answer to that is the same as it was to start the season. In the bullpen. Oddly enough, after getting shelled in three straight starts (18 ER in 12.1 IP) he has gone scoreless in four appearances across 7 innings, allowing just six hits and one walk. I think this is the one that fans need to think about again, as Flexen can be a nice change of pace in the Mariners bullpen, and help out anytime a starter has to leave a game early.

Mariners fans are fed up with Scott Servais

This is a bit of a bonus one here... notice that I said Mariners and not players?

As long as Servais is with the Mariners, I think he is forever going to be a in a state of "Is this guy actually good and the right choice to manage the team?", whether he is deserving or not.

That's the big question. Is he deserving of that discussion from fans?

I think he just might be. It's always hard to tell with a skipper, especially when you start running into teams that do have a fair amount of talent. Is it on him that the team can't hit? Or does this fall to the hitting coach? We have a team that, on paper to start 2023, looked like one of the best collections of offensive players that the Mariners have had in a long time.

Between the bad offense (yeah, it's been bad this year) and the confusion that sometimes rears it's head about the bullpen, plenty of fans question Servais. I remember this coming up last year, and it's made it's way around again. I have no idea who would replace him, and that's why I wouldn't necessarily just want to boot him out, but it's something that fans seems to be getting tired of, and Servais and crew need to turn it around, and quick.
