Ranking the Seattle Mariners Uniform Combinations

The Seattle Mariners have used largely the same uniforms since the team moved into then SafeCo Field, now under the name T-Mobile Park. They did go through a slight update in the early 2010s when they added extra details to the name on the front of the jerseys, but other than that, we haven’t seen many changes in their uniforms.

The Mariners did add the Sunday Cream jerseys in 2015 to wear only on Sunday home games, to give a nod to past Mariners uniform styles with the cream and royal blue. Some fans were thrilled with the addition to the jersey rotation, but some differ on this view. They also started to wear their northwest green jerseys on the road down the stretch in 2021, as Tyler Anderson (a University of Oregon alum) preferred it, and the team was winning a considerable number of games in the northwest green.

In this article, I’ll be ranking the Mariners’ uniform combinations, starting with the navy blues at home:

#1 Navy Blue Jersey at Home

The look of the navy blue jersey and hat combination over the white pants makes the blue pop much more than it does with gray pants on the road. At home, it looks more vibrant and stands out much more against the white pants compared to the gray. It is a clean look, and goes great with the navy blue hat to match.

Under the lights of a night game, the blue shines more, especially since it is darker for night games in Seattle when the roof is closed. Not only does the all navy blue combination go well for darker evening games in October, but it also looks great in day games.

Here, Marco Gonzales is pitching in a day game in Seattle, wearing the navy blue top. The blue stands out here again, and it can be seen to match the piping of the white pants well. It pops and stands out much more than the all white look for a day game. The wearing of the blue tops at home started in 2020 and should continue as it is something new and brings a clean look. The “SEATTLE” across the chest is also a unique touch, as it shows off the city as well.

#2 Northwest Green at Home

The northwest green is the biggest standout of the Mariners colors, and it has long been the Friday night color for the team. They rock the northwest green, often referred to as the teal jerseys, with the navy blue hats with a matching northwest green brim. The hats offer a good compliment to the jerseys, and is the only hat the Mariners wear that has an accent color on the brim.

The northwest green, or teal, is not a true green that you would see on trees, but it is a unique color to baseball. The Mariners are the only team to wear this color on a regular basis, and it gives the team a nice standout to the Mariners colors. It also provides a nice accent to the navy blue; in the picture above, the blue undershirts of Kyle Lewis and Jarred Kelenic offer a strong compliment to the northwest green. Also, the color pops more with the home white pants and looks better in the lights and background of T-Mobile Park in Seattle.

#4 Navy Blue Jerseys on the Road

Coming in at number 4 is one of the most frequent jerseys worn by the Seattle Mariners. This was in the past worn maybe once a road trip, but has now become a key staple of the Mariners on the road. It looks clean and as per usual of road jerseys in Major League Baseball, they showcase the city name on the chest rather than the team name. The “SEATTLE” across the chest in silver matches the gray pants nicely.

The navy blue really matches well from the hat to the uniform, and is usually incorporated by the players in either their cleats or their shirts under their jerseys. The combination here flows well from the gray pants, to the silver numbers on the left side, to the SEATTLE across the front, and to the names and numbers on the back. The font on the back is a more curved font, as it is a standout to the usual block numbers and names on the back.

The different font can be seen here in the name “KELENIC“, but also in the partial 10 you can see. It is much more of a scripted font here, giving it a uniqueness to the navy blue jersey tops. The uniqueness, and the matching of navy blue and silver/gray land this as the 4th best uniform combo.

#5 Mariners Sunday Cream Uniforms

The fifth best Mariners uniform combination is the most recent jersey added to the mix. The Mariners added the cream home jerseys in 2015 to give a nod to the history of the Seattle Mariners, as they are meant to be a current take on the early days of the Mariners with the cream/yellow and royal blue. The royal blue certainly stands out compared to the typical navy blue used.

It is a good look, but seems a little odd at times. The fact of having the different color scheme entirely is a bit strange. The Mariners certainly can pull it off, but it is not as good as the navy, northwest green, and white color scheme that is used on a normal basis. Another thing that drags this color way down, is that the players have fancy gear, protective equipment, or gloves that are made to look special with the blue or northwest green colors and it looks totally mismatched on Sundays. This is something that they should work on to fix.

The Mariners do a good job of not overusing these jerseys, as they are only worn on Sunday home games, but the colors are overall a bit too far distanced from the normal colors to be one of the three best uniforms.

#6 Northwest Green on the Road

The Mariners have never worn their northwest green jerseys on the road before. That changed in 2021, when starting pitcher Tyler Anderson was supposedly one of the prominent voices in wanting to wear the teal. The team also did not perform too bad in them, as they were 17-4 in those jerseys, with many of those coming on the road down the stretch. The color looks more flat with the gray pants though, and it just looks less strong.

At home, the northwest green pops and is a solid strong color. On the road, it looks like a much lighter color when watching the game on television. In my opinion, it is being used too much and doesn’t need to be used on the road. The navy blue jersey and all gray jersey on the road are a much better rotation to use. However, the team and players should be applauded for mixing up the uniforms, as it was a welcome change for the team and it showed a sense of creativity going forward.

The 7th and final uniform combination is the least colorful combination of all, and unfortunately has been around for quite a long time.

#7 All Gray Road Uniforms

The worst Mariners uniform is the classic MLB all-gray road uniforms. The Mariners have a fairly basic road design, with the “SEATTLE” displayed across the chest to represent their city as the road team in a different ballpark. The shirt underneath the jersey of Logan Gilbert here is a good contrast to the gray of the uniform, but the gray is overall a fairly basic jersey, which is why it lands near the end of the list and is not anything special.

The gray is overall pretty bland and has begun to be phased out a little bit. The team has started to wear the navy blue jersey tops on the road more and more. They overall are just the worst combination the Mariners have. It is just very bland and boring. The Mariners at least add something new when they wear their northwest green or navy blue jerseys on top of the gray pants.

The Mariners gray jerseys are not terrible by any means, but they have better options. I believe they made a good move to start using their navy, and even northwest green, uniform tops on the road to get away from the all gray look so much.

Overall, the Mariners have some pretty nice uniforms. They are not iconic jerseys or the best in baseball, but they are a good representation of the northwest, as the colors and logos are a good reflection of the team and the city. The team should be getting a city edition jersey in the next year or two, which will hopefully be a great set that Mariners fans will love.
