Trade James Pazos and Max Povse to St. Louis for Jose Martinez

I’ll be honest, this is likely going to be my favorite deal of the whole simulation. It just makes so much sense. James Pazos has 4 years of club control, Jose Martinez has 4 years of club control. The Cardinals need bullpen help, particularly LHP, the Mariners need a 1B/DH type. Guess who is strictly a 1B/DH type with no place to play in St. Louis? Jose Martinez.

It all just fits together so well for both sides. It is a deal that benefits both sides, and those are just the greatest. Yes, the Mariners will miss James Pazos. But Martinez is an absolute baller at the plate.

Martinez is a career .309/.372/.478 career hitter. Did I mention he is pre-arbitration? He has a career 130 wRC+. Did I say 4 years of club control? He takes walks and doesn’t strike out. The guy can hit.

What he can’t do is play in the OF. He is awful out there, which severely hurt his value in St.Louis where he has no place to play. Martinez is actually an okay first-baseman and we now have an opening. DH is also an option in Seattle, so there is no reason to keep him out of the lineup.

Overall, these deals leave us feeling better about our rotation depth, 1B/DH, OF depth, and catcher depth. While none of these deals are “sexy” they are still solid moves that raise the floor of the 2019 team without sacrificing much of the future.
