Pick 123, Seattle Mariners select Morgan Cooper, RHP Texas

Joey Morgan would be the home run pick for Seattle, but it is unlikely he will fall into the mid 4th round. Instead, Dipoto and company snag their first pitcher in the draft. Cooper looks the part of a Major League Starter, standing at 6’4″ and 220 lbs.

He poses 4 solid average pitches, along with command and mound presence. The fastball sits at 92 mph with a solid cutter, though his change-up is the pitch most likely to be plus. He gets good sink, but also generates plenty of strikeouts.

Cooper’s command is above average, but he does struggle to maintain his stuff and velocity the later he gets in the game and season. This leaves some scouts to wonder if Cooper just needs to overhaul his conditioning or if he is destined for the bullpen.
