Pick 55, Mariners select Jacob Pearson, OF West Monroe High School

Jerry Dipoto’s draft history shows a compelling pattern. A mix of high floor college players and higher risk high school players. He stuck to this pattern in his first draft with the Mariners, sandwiching the safety of Kyle Lewis and Bryson Brigman with high school bat Joe Rizzo in 2016.

The Mariners should continue the trend in 2017. Pearson, a LSU commit, has shown average to slightly above-average tool at the plate. His standout tool is his speed, which he uses both on the bases and in the field. He has the ability to be a 20/20 type of offensive threat, while providing good defense in center field.

Pearson is old for a high school prospect, 19, and had shoulder labrum surgery on his throwing shoulder. His arm is well below average, and he will need to continue to strengthen his shoulder, and arm,  if he wishes to stay in center field.
