Ryan Uhl – 1B – IUP – Round 7, Pick 215

The M’s picked IUP power hitting first baseman, Ryan Uhl in the 7th round Tuesday in the MLB Draft. Uhl was named a finalist for the 2015 Tino Martinez Award in his Senior season. Named in honor of the former Mariners first baseman, the Tino Martinez Award is handed out annually to the most outstanding player in division II baseball.

The All American is a behemoth, standing 6’6 and tipping the scales at 230 lbs. He is a big man, but he is all muscle. Ulh posted a .415 batting average with 29 home runs and 74 RBI’s across 142 at bats this season. The 22-year-old first baseman set school records in home runs and home run rate (0.66 per game). Ulh played solid defense for the Crimson Hawks as well, registering a .993 fielding percentage and making just 2 errors his senior season at first base.

The Mariners lack offensive firepower, and Ryan Ulh certainly ticks that box. He is a giant human being, and thus his swing might be a little long. Uhl’s slugging percentage was over .1000 this spring for Indiana, but it will be interesting to see how his gaudy numbers translate in the minor leagues.
